Getting Temporarily At-Risk Students To GO Beyond Virginia’s Math SOL (Grades 3 - Algebra I) Workshop
October 15 2015
This action-packed and practical workshop is a comprehensive version of the strategies shared at both of the Virginia Tiered System of Supports (VTSS) Conferences presented earlier this year to assist temporarily at-risk math students.
The goal of this day of learning and sharing is to provide participating Virginia educators with a series of new research-based strategies to deepen the understanding and confidence of at-risk students with rigorous concepts that are the foundation of Virginia’s math content and process standards. Hands-on sessions will actively engage each participant in the reasoning, modeling, communicating, and justifying skills which are required by Virginia’s math standards and are essential college and career readiness skills. An electronic toolkit of ‘shelf-ready’ resources will be provided for each participant to redeliver in their school and/or division.
Schools/Divisions are encouraged to send a vertical team of teachers or teams made up of an administrator, a math teacher, and a special education teacher. Individual teachers will also benefit from participation in these new strategies that build students’ mathematical confidence, understanding, and achievement.
Workshop participants will have opportunities to:
Create new learning structures (templates provided in an electronic toolkit) that allow the teacher to differentiate the amount of explicit guidance, “scaffolding,” and practice children need to consolidate new concepts.
Practice new math ‘games’ that assist students who have difficulty remembering math facts, handling word problems, and doing multi-step arithmetic.
Learn a system to develop SOL specific authentic assessments in mathematics and apply the framework to assess an SOL from their grade/course.
Take away classroom-tested strategies for improving student core literacy skills, such as critical thinking, comprehending math on a screen, and analytical skills, that can be implemented immediately upon return to the classroom.
Discover ‘Boot-Camp’ templates that use the data provided in the Student Detail by Question report.
to access resources used during the day.
