Understanding and Supporting the Development of Performance Assessments for Elementary & Secondary School Administrators: Part I

The state’s Portrait of a Graduate with its focus on 21st century skills and college and career readiness for students calls for a shift away from an overemphasis on standardized tests toward a more balanced approach to assessment through the inclusion of authentic performance assessments. While performance assessments are not new to education, the challenges of developing them within a standards-based curriculum and using them as accountability measures are.  More importantly, high-quality performance assessments offer a rich opportunity to develop deeper, longer lasting learning outcomes for students.  This one-day workshop provides elementary and secondary school administrators a hands-on introduction to leading the design and use of performance assessments to improve instruction and student learning.

Participants in this workshop will learn to:

  • Identify common types of performance assessments, including those best used as alternatives to the SOL tests in the Virginia context;
  • Determine the key characteristics of authentic performance assessments;
  • Review sample performance assessments against quality criteria that teachers can use to strengthen their own performance assessments;
  • Identify the types and qualities of effective rubrics for scoring performance assessments;
  • Access a number of excellent resources to support use of performance assessments and associated instruction; and
  • Identify ways in which school administrators can create supportive school environments for the development and use of performance assessments in their schools’ classrooms

This workshop will build on previous sessions provided by the Virginia Department of Education and other professional organizations in the following ways:

  • VDOE officials will describe the current status and future direction of the state’s assessment and accountability system
  • Participants will engage in relevant, practical, hands-on activities facilitated by Jay McTighe and Chris Gareis
  • Usable resources such as review protocols, design templates, and Virginia-specific examples will be provided to participants
  • Participants will have opportunities to network and share ideas to address the challenges and harness the potential of performance assessments.

VASCD is sponsoring a similar workshop designed for Central Office Content Area Specialists and School-Based Teacher Leaders.  For more information and/or to register, please CLICK HERE: VASCD Performance Assessment Workshop
