SELECTION PROCESS AND TIMETABLE FOR
THE VIRGINIA SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR

SELECTING REGIONAL SUPERINTENDENTS OF THE YEAR

1. Each of the eight regions forms a selection committee. Regional Selection Committees may include individuals who are not VASS members such as representatives from businesses or institutions of higher education. February 2022.
   
   
2. Regional Selection Committees select Regional Superintendents of the Year. Attached Superintendent of the Year applications may be used in this process, but it is not required. March, 2022.
   
   
3. Regional Selection Committees submit names of Regional Superintendents of the Year and forward completed applications of Regional winners to VASS for consideration as the Virginia Superintendent of the Year. No later than March 25, 2022.

SELECTING VIRGINIA SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR

1. VASS organizes Virginia Superintendent of the Year Selection Committee comprised of the following representatives: the Presidents of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents, Virginia School Boards Association, Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers, Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Virginia Education Association, Virginia Association for Elementary School Principals, Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals, and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction or a designee.
   
   
2. Applications of eight successful candidates selected as Regional Superintendents of the Year (same applications) are distributed to Virginia Superintendent of the Year Selection Committee for review. Week of March 28, 2022.
   
   
3.  Virginia Superintendent of the Year Selection Committee convenes and selects top two candidates for interviews. Week of April 4, 2022.
   
   
4.  Top two candidates are interviewed by members of the VASS Executive Committee who selects the Virginia Superintendent of the Year. Week of April 11, 2022
   
   
5.  Regional Superintendents of the Year and Virginia Superintendent of the Year are announced by the Regional Chairs and the VASS President, during VASS Annual Spring Conference Awards Luncheon. May 2, 2022.
   

NATIONAL SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR

1. VASS assists Virginia Superintendent of the year with application, if needed, for National Superintendent of the Year 2023 competition sponsored by AASA.
   

   AASA application deadline: November 1, 2022.
