Due to CDC guidance concerning the serious health risks presented by Coronavirus Pandemic, the VASS 2020 Annual Spring Conference, 26-28, 2020 has been CANCELLED. We hope you will be able to join us at next year’s VASS Spring Conference, April 25-27, 2021.
If you have any questions, please contact Liza Scallet (VASS Administrative Assistant).
The 2020 Spring Conference program is designed to address two areas of professional interest that were identified in the informal regional surveys conducted this year by the members of the VASS Professional Learning Committee: Social-Emotional Learning and the Profiles of a Virginia Graduate, Classroom, Educator, and Leader. On Monday morning David Adams of the Urban Assembly will provide members with a highly engaging two-hour workshop on organizing school divisions around social-emotional academic development. During Monday afternoon, members of the Commonwealth Learning Partnership and Virginia superintendents will discuss how the Profiles of a Virginia Graduate, Classroom, Educator, and Leader relate to each other and the work that is being done to promote the Profiles at the state and local levels.
These presentations and discussions will set the stage for launching two new Superintendent Professional Learning Communities in which members will learn in depth and continuously from each other about these two areas. Anyone who is interested is invited to attend the initial meetings of the Superintendent PLCs on Tuesday morning.
In addition to the professional learning focus of the conference, there will be entertaining and outstanding speakers on both days to enhance the conference experience of VASS members. Monday’s program will end with a humorous presentation by national speaker and author Ron Culberson entitled, “Do it well, make it fun. The key to life, death, and almost everything in between.” On Tuesday morning, VASS’s own Bill Sroufe, Superintendent of Colonial Heights, will give a very personal presentation on the person who inspired him to overcome his challenges and pursue his career as a superintendent. Bill’s journey is depicted in his book, Everyone Needs a Mrs. Bailey, which will be available to all conference participants.
At the conclusion of the conference award-winning author and education leader Alan Blankenstein will discuss his production of the film “Petersburg Rising” and the principles of courageous leadership that yield “excellence through equity”, the title of his new book co-authored by Pedro Noquera. Excellence Through Equity is free for superintendent members of VASS.
