Event Details

This important program will support Virginia school superintendents and their district teams in addressing, adopting and advocating student social and emotional wellness. Attendees will be prepared to: adopt practical skills from the leading voices in social and emotional learning; promote wellness for students, educators and the entire community; implement changes that foster a more positive, system-wide school climate; and address social-emotional barriers to increase student learning.

The following essential questions will be addressed by the presenters during the one-day workshop:

  • How to develop systems and structures to organize your district around social-emotional academic development

  • How to explicitly teach, assess, integrate and sustain SEL programming in your schools and district

  • How to build capacity within school personnel to achieve outcomes related to high quality SEL implementation

  • What Does SEL look like in School and what are the typical skills and activities of SEL in schools

  • Recognizing the "how" of teaching SEL is a little different from other forms of instruction, what are strategies and practical models of SEL skills that can be used in a variety of settings and with a variety of populations

  • How SEL is most effective when taught in a culturally responsive way, and strategies to make any SEL lesson culturally relevant for your classroom

  • How SEL can empower Students to address injustice

  • How to use SEL skills to effectively address inequities in your schools and communities

Featured Presenters

David AdamasDavid Adams, M.Ed, is the Director of Social-Emotional Learning at The Urban Assembly and serves on the Board of Directors for the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL). He previously served as the Social-Emotional Learning Coordinator for District 75 where he shaped the District's approach to social-emotional learning for students with severe cognitive and behavioral challenges. He has worked internationally in schools in England, standing up and evaluating programs of positive behavioral supports and Social-Emotional Learning as a research intern at Yale University’s Health, Emotion and Behavior Lab, and published multiple academic papers around the relationship of social-emotional competence, and student academic and behavioral outcomes.

 

 

 

joseph erardi

Dr. Joseph Erardi, presently an executive board member of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), recently retired after 40 years of service to CT children. Dr. Erardi served as a school superintendent for 20 years and spent the last four years of his career leading the rebuild and recovery of the Newtown, CT school district. Dr. Erardi continues to make a difference in the lives of children by speaking across the country on school safety and consulting on best practice with security, social emotional learning, and positive climate and culture. Dr. Erardi has been named as the CT Supt of the Year (2017), the CT PTA Supt of the Year (2016), and the outstanding CT Administrator of the year by both the University of Hartford and Central CT State University. Dr. Erardi remains active in education as an adjunct professor in the CT State University System and by working with numerous Boards of Education as they look to hire their new superintendent.

 

 

Dr. Luvelle Brown

Luvelle Brown is Superintendent of the Ithaca City School District and author of Culture of Love: Cultivating a Positive Organizational Culture. Dr. Brown has received various awards and recognitions. TrustED lists the 2017 New York State Superintendent of the Year as one of the nation’s top educators and thought leaders. He was selected by the US Department of Education as one of the nation’s top 100 innovative Superintendents. Additionally, Dr. Brown has served on the New York State Council of School Superintendents’ (NYSCOSS) Executive Committee, The School Superintendents’ Association (AASA) Digital Consortium, The Center for Digital Education Advisory Council, and CoSN’s Empowered Superintendent Advisory Panel.

Event Schedule

The workshop runs from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Registration and breakfast begin at 8:00 a.m.

Lunch will be served at noon.

Registration Details

The workshop fee is $210 for each participant.

Registration fees include breakfast and lunch.

Free parking and internet are also provided.

The registration deadline is Wednesday, October 30, 2019.

In the registration form (below), required fields are indicated with a red asterisk.  Mistakes made in completing the form will be highlighted in red.

Once you have submitted the registration, the person or people whom you have designated to receive a confirmation email should see that email (with registration information included) within 24 hours.

Pre-Payment is not required. However, if you would like to pay now by credit card or PayPal, you will be provided with a link to the VASS online payment portal after you complete your registration.

If you do not pay by credit card or PayPal at registration, the person whom you identify below as the Billing Contact will receive an invoice for payment of the registration fee after the workshop or conference has been held. 

If a purchase order number is provided on the registration form, it will be referenced on the invoice.

Notification of cancellation must be sent by email to Liza Scallet, the VASS Administrative Assistant, by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 . . . or you will be billed in full.
